TPEN also inhibits the growth of tumor cells by interacting with mitochondria and inducing mitochondrial dysfunction. TPEN synergistically induces death in neuronal cells when combined with other agents that are known to cause neuronal cell death. In vivo studies have shown that TPEN produces neuroprotective effects at normoxic temperatures, but can be toxic at hyperthermic temperatures.
