5-Methylbenzo[b]thiophene is an inorganic chemical that has been found to be toxic to cells. The cytotoxicity of 5-methylbenzo[b]thiophene is strain-dependent and was observed in wild-type cells, but not in a strain with a mutation in the sulfite reductase gene. This chemical also affects the concentration of Ca2+ ions and carbon sources, which are important for cellular metabolism. The linear regression analysis suggests that ionizable groups may be responsible for this toxicity. Acute toxicities were seen at high concentrations and include oxidative stress, cell death, and DNA damage.
