(2S,3S)-3-Methylpyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid (PMPCA) is a natural product that inhibits the enzyme catalysis of the bacterial GTPase-activating protein (GAP). It is a homochiral compound, which means that it can be synthesized from a single chiral starting material. PMPCA has shown antibiotic activity against gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. This compound has been found to inhibit the synthesis of proteins in these bacteria by inhibiting the action of hydroxylase and x-ray crystal structures have been determined for this compound. The biosynthesis pathway for PMPCA has also been discovered and studied in detail using liquid chromatography methods.
