Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used in the treatment of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It inhibits cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and blocks the production of prostaglandins. Meloxicam has a low potential for ulceration and gastrointestinal injury, as well as a low incidence of adverse events. It is available in both oral and injectable forms. Meloxicam is typically prescribed at higher doses than other NSAIDs to achieve an equivalent reduction in pain and inflammation.
