N-Methylbarbituric acid is a polycarboxylic acid that is found in fruits and vegetables. This compound has a hydroxy group and an alkynyl group, which are both capable of reacting with other compounds. N-Methylbarbituric acid is present in urine as a metabolite of barbiturate drugs. It can be used as an analytical marker for the detection of these drugs in urine samples. The presence of N-methylbarbituric acid in urine samples has been shown to correlate with the intake of barbiturate drugs. It can be detected by FT-IR spectroscopy or vibrational spectroscopy.
