Methyl2-(N-benzoylaminomethyl)-3-oxobutyrate is a dipeptide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the active site of the enzyme histidine decarboxylase. This binding prevents the formation of an intermediate in the synthesis of histidine, which is required for cell wall biosynthesis. Methyl2-(N-benzoylaminomethyl)-3-oxobutyrate has been shown to be stereoselective and acetoxylation selective. It also has antibiotic properties against erythromycin-resistant bacteria.
