4-Methyl-5-aminoindole is a solubilizing agent that belongs to the group of pyridine derivatives. It is soluble in water and other polar solvents. 4-Methyl-5-aminoindole has been shown to be an isoform selective inhibitor of the enzyme tyrosine hydroxylase, which catalyzes the conversion of tyrosine to dopamine. This drug also inhibits monoamine oxidase (MAO) and reversibly inhibits phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase (PNMT). The potency of 4-Methyl-5-aminoindole as an inhibitor of tyrosine hydroxylase is 10 times higher than that of propranolol.
4 Methyl 5 amino indole can be used for the treatment of Parkinson's disease, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, depression, and narcolepsy.
