3-Methoxy-4-nitrophenyl)methanol is a hydrophobic chemical with analgesic properties. It has been shown to be an effective analgesic that acts by inhibiting the enzyme nitric oxide synthase. 3-Methoxy-4-nitrophenyl)methanol also inhibits the production of nitric oxide and other reactive nitrogen species, which are responsible for inflammation and vasodilation. This compound is a useful reagent for the synthesis of carbamates, due to its ability to reduce nitro groups in the presence of chloroformate. 3-Methoxy-4-nitrophenyl)methanol has been shown to act as a bioreductive agent in certain biological systems, such as DNA repair enzymes.
