- Benzaldehyde, 2-(methylsulfonyl)-
2-(Methylsulfonyl)benzaldehyde is a chemical compound that is used as an antimicrobial agent. It has been shown to have a potent effect against the growth of Gram-positive bacteria, such as Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus, but also inhibits the growth of Gram-negative bacteria. 2-(Methylsulfonyl)benzaldehyde has been shown to be toxic to rats at high doses, with clinical signs including weight loss, prostration and death. The toxicity studies on rats showed that 2-(methylsulfonyl)benzaldehyde was not mutagenic in the Ames test or clastogenic in the mouse micronucleus test. This chemical also appears to have some cationic surfactant properties.
