2-Methyl-4-nitrophenol is an organic compound with the formula CHNO. It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water, but not in most organic solvents. The chemical can be extracted from coal tar or made by nitrating phenol with nitric acid. 2-Methyl-4-nitrophenol has been used as a solvent and as a precursor to other compounds such as nitrobenzene and aniline. The toxicological profile of 2-methyl-4-nitrophenol includes studies on its safety, toxicity, and mutagenicity. The molecule has been detected at low concentrations in the blood plasma of humans following inhalation exposure at high levels in animals; consequently it is classified as a possible human carcinogen by the United States EPA and International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
