The compound binds to bacterial cytochrome bd oxidase and prevents the electron transfer from cytochrome bd to oxygen, thereby preventing aerobic respiration. 6-Methyl-5-hepten-2-one also inhibits mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase, leading to a build up of hydrogen peroxide and reactive oxygen species (ROS). This leads to cell death by oxidative stress. 6 Methyl 5 Heptene 2 One has been shown to inhibit the growth of many types of bacterial strains including those that cause infectious diseases such as tuberculosis.
