Menadione 2,3-epoxide is a monomeric compound that has viscosity and is used in the treatment of chronic inflammation. This compound is produced by irradiation of vitamin K3. It reacts with animal tissues to form epoxides, which are also known as quinones. Menadione 2,3-epoxide has been shown to inhibit glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase and monomers have been shown to cause glutathione transferase activity in rat liver microsomes. Menadione 2,3-epoxide may also be involved in the production of epoxides from the oxidation of the naphtoquinone ring system. Menadione 2,3-epoxide has also been shown to inhibit viral replication by interacting with viral enzymes such as the virus’ RNA polymerase enzyme and its DNA polymerase enzyme.
