8-Methoxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid trisodium salt is a fatty acid that is derived from the sulfonation of 8-methoxypyrene. It has been shown to have antimicrobial properties and can be used as an agent in soaps and detergents. 8-Methoxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid trisodium salt inhibits bacterial growth by binding to enzyme activities, such as disulfide bond reductase and thioredoxin reductase. This compound also suppresses the production of hydrogen peroxide in human serum at concentrations of 1 mM. 8-Methoxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid trisodium salt is cytotoxic to cells at concentrations of 1 mM with significant cell death occurring at 10 mM.
