Methacrifos inhibits acetylcholinesterase, which leads to the accumulation of acetylcholine at nerve endings and results in paralysis. The chemical structure of methacrifos consists of a phenoxy group, an ethylene diamine, a methyl group, and a nitro group. Acetylcholinesterase inhibition by methacrifos has been shown to be reversible. This insecticide can also cause cross-reactivity with other organophosphates when used for sample preparation or for nitro reactions.
