Methyl bromodifluoroacetate is a chemical with the formula CF3CH2BrO. It is a volatile liquid that has been used in industrial processes as an anti-viral agent. Methyl bromodifluoroacetate inhibits viral protease activity by binding to the active site of the enzyme and blocking access of substrate. The inhibitory effect can be reversed by adding hydrogen fluoride, which acts as a competitive inhibitor. Methyl bromodifluoroacetate is also effective against other types of proteases, including those from bacteria and fungi. Structural analysis has shown that methyl bromodifluoroacetate binds to the active site in three different orientations. The ester group appears to form hydrogen bonds with the amino acid residues at the active site of the enzyme, while the chloride atom forms a salt bridge with an acidic residue on one side of the active site cleft and two aliphatic hydrocarbon chains are oriented towards two
