Methallenestril is a synthetic estrogen that is used as hormone replacement therapy in post-menopausal women. It has been shown to be effective in treating symptoms of cancer, inflammatory diseases, and an assortment of autoimmune diseases. Methallenestril belongs to the family of estrogens, which are estradiol benzoate derivatives that have a methyl group at the C17β position. There are many synthetic pathways for methallenestril and other estrogens that involve the use of stilbene derivatives. The hormone is taken up by cells by passive diffusion and binds to estrogen receptors in the cell nucleus. Methallenestril can also bind to progesterone receptors, which may explain its anti-inflammatory properties.
