Maleimidoacetic acid is a reactive chemical that can be used in the synthesis of glycan probes. It reacts with unsaturated alkyl groups and is used to detect the presence of infectious diseases, such as HIV infection. Maleimidoacetic acid has been shown to react with glycosylated proteins and glycoconjugates, including those on the surface of cancer cells, which makes it useful for targeting cancerous tissue. Maleimidoacetic acid binds to glycoproteins on the surface of viruses and prevents them from binding to their cellular receptors. This prevents virus replication. Maleimidoacetic acid also binds to receptor sites on cells that are involved in cell growth and proliferation, making it an effective treatment for some types of cancer.
