9-Maleimidoacridine is a fluorescent probe that can be used to detect carnitine, fatty acids and other compounds. It is also an inhibitor of the enzyme carnitine palmitoyltransferase (CPT), which plays a key role in fatty acid synthesis. 9-Maleimidoacridine inhibits CPT by binding to the enzyme's active site and preventing it from synthesizing new fatty acids or transporting existing ones into the interior of the cell. This inhibition leads to a decrease in cellular levels of carnitine and other compounds that are dependent on CPT for their synthesis or transport. The effect of 9-maleimidoacridine on CPT activity can be monitored by measuring its fluorescence intensity at different concentrations.
