Medroxy progesterone 17-acetate is a synthetic hormone that is used for the treatment of female infertility and to postpone menstruation. It is also used in the treatment of prostate cancer, endometrial cancer, and breast cancer. Medroxy progesterone 17-acetate binds to the progesterone receptor and inhibits ovulation by suppressing luteinizing hormone release from the pituitary gland. The drug has been shown to be effective in clinical trials as a contraceptive agent, with no significant side effects. Medroxy progesterone 17-acetate has been shown to have a low solubility in water (1 mg/mL) and must be dissolved in organic solvents such as ethanol or acetone before it can be injected into humans or animals.
Medroxy progesterone 17-acetate is not regulated by the FDA but is regulated by other regulatory agencies around the world.
