4-Mercapto-O-cresol (4MOC) is a structural analog of peroxisomal proliferator-activated receptor δ (PPARδ) and is a coupling agent. It has been shown to be an efficient method to produce PPARδ agonists with high efficiency. 4MOC binds to the lipid droplets in the liver that are associated with hyperlipidemia and can be used as a treatment for this condition. 4MOC also has been shown to be an analogue of hydrogensulfate, which is a metabolic syndrome target. The biological target of 4MOC is PPARδ, which it activates by binding to its ligand-binding domain. This causes the recruitment of coactivators, such as PGC1α, which increases gene transcription and protein synthesis.
