2-Mercaptophenylacetic acid is a synthetic molecule that has been shown to lead to the inhibition of fatty acid synthesis and tumor growth. 2-Mercaptophenylacetic acid is a disulfide bond with two reactive thiol groups, which can be reduced by sulfhydryl reducing agents such as DTT or mercaptoethanol. This compound also has been shown to be active in the ht-29 cell line and other types of cancer cells. 2-Mercaptophenylacetic acid may be conjugated with small molecules such as biotin or clickable tags, which would allow for imaging studies in living cells. It has been shown to have a kinetic rate constant of 0.5 M/sec at pH 7, making it useful for analyses involving fast reactions.
