Mesoridazine is a low-potency antipsychotic drug that blocks the dopamine D2 receptor. It is used to treat schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, including mania and bipolar disorder. Mesoridazine binds to the 2-adrenergic receptors and inhibits the release of dopamine in the brain. This drug has been shown to have neurotrophic effects on neurons in vitro, which may contribute to its therapeutic effect on schizophrenia. Mesoridazine also has a low level of toxicity in humans, but studies have shown that geriatric patients are more sensitive to this side effect than younger adults. In addition, mesoridazine can inhibit the activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes that metabolize other drugs, leading to potential drug interactions with other medications.
