6-Methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone is a metalloporphyrin that can be used as a bioreductive agent. It is an uncatalyzed hydrogen peroxide oxidant that is able to form semiquinones and quinones in the presence of thiols (SH) or thioethers (SR). 6-Methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone has shown to transfer one electron between the two redox centers through reversible oxidation and reduction reactions. It also has been shown to be a homogeneous catalyst for hydrogenation reactions.
