5-Methyl-3-isoxazolecarboxylic acid hydrazide is a synthetic drug that is used in the treatment of depression. It is converted to its active form by hydrolysis, and then inhibits monoamine oxidase type A (MAO-A) by forming a covalent bond with the enzyme. This prevents the breakdown of monoamines, such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. 5-Methyl-3-isoxazolecarboxylic acid hydrazide has been shown to have antidepressant activity in animal studies. The mechanism of action in humans is not clear at this time.
