- 8-Quinolinesulfonic acid, 3-methyl-
3-Methyl-8-quinolinesulfonic acid is a chlorinating agent that can be used to produce 3,4,5-trichloropropane-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid (TCA) from propionaldehyde. It is used in the production of acrylates and other organic chemicals. 3-Methyl-8-quinolinesulfonic acid can also be used as an eutectic mixture with potassium hydroxide to produce a high boiling point mixture that will not freeze at low temperatures. The most common use of this chemical is in the chlorination of drinking water to remove organic compounds such as benzene, which are carcinogenic.
