• Descrição: Methylmalonic acid is a metabolite of the vitamin B12. It is formed from homocysteine via the enzyme methylmalonyl-CoA mutase, which converts it to methylmalonic acid. Methylmalonic acid can be detected in the blood and urine and is used as a diagnostic tool for metabolic diseases such as bowel disease and cobalamin deficiency. The rate constant (k) for the conversion of methylmalonic acid to methylmalonate has been determined by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry analysis. The analytical method involves derivatization with an organic solvent, followed by chromatographic analysis. This compound has been shown to cause neuronal death in rats and may lead to peripheral neuropathy in humans.
