N-Methylpropargylamine is a dopamine receptor antagonist that selectively blocks the D2-type receptors. It has been shown to inhibit necrotic cell death and neurodegeneration in mice with Parkinson's disease, and also inhibits dsp-4 activity, which may be associated with the neuroprotective effects. NMPPA is an irreversible inhibitor of dopamine, which means it will bind to dopamine receptors and stay there for a long time. This prevents any other drug from binding to the receptor at all. The cycloaddition process by which NMPPA binds to the dopamine receptor is analytical method that can be used to determine if this drug is present in a sample. A test for amines can be used to detect NMPPA in urine samples.
