Midazolam is an imidazopyridine that is used as a sedative and hypnotic. It is chemically stable, which makes it suitable for use in injection solutions, nasal drugs, and tablets. Midazolam has been shown to have a rapid onset of action and short duration of effect, which are desirable qualities for a drug to be used as pre-operative medication or for sedation during diagnostic or therapeutic procedures. The kinetic energy of midazolam is dependent on the concentration-time curve in the central nervous system (CNS). This drug also interacts with other drugs such as triazolam, mianserin hydrochloride, and phenytoin, which increases the likelihood of adverse effects. Midazolam has also been shown to cause neuronal death by inhibiting the production of nitric oxide synthase.
