Monoisobutyl phthalate is a phthalate that has been shown to induce adrenocortical carcinoma in experimental animals. It is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes, which results in the formation of monoisobutyl hydroxylated metabolites and their corresponding glucuronide conjugates. Mono-isobutyl phthalate has been found to affect the body mass index of infants and women, as well as contraceptive use in women.
Monoisobutyl phthalate is also found to be toxic to CD-1 mice, where it binds to dna and protein, alters cell growth and proliferation, and induces apoptosis. The mice also show histological changes in the liver, kidney, lung, and spleen.
