NSC 153858 is a conjugate of the antibody murine sarcoma virus (MSV) with maytansine. It has been shown to be effective against breast cancer and other cancers. The MSV-maytansine conjugate specifically binds to low-density lipoprotein receptors on tumor cells, which are not present in normal cells. This results in an antitumor response that is more specific for tumor cells than traditional chemotherapy drugs such as trastuzumab, which can have severe side effects. NSC 153858 has been found to have minimal toxicity in animal studies and has shown promising antitumor activity in vitro against hl-60 cells and breast cancer cell lines.
