Methylcarbamic acid phenyl ester is a carbamate insecticide that inhibits acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine in the synapse. It is used to control infestations of insects such as cockroaches, fleas and ticks. Methylcarbamic acid phenyl ester has been shown to inhibit the replication of DNA and RNA in bacteria. The mechanism of action is not well understood but may involve inhibition of certain enzymes (e.g., kinases) or binding to nucleotide phosphate. Methylcarbamic acid phenyl ester has been shown to cause genotoxic effects in some animal studies, although its carcinogenic potential in humans is not well established.
