5-Methoxypyrazine-2-carboxylic acid (5MPCA) is a diastereoselective inhibitor of β-amyloid peptide aggregation. It has been shown to reduce the formation of β-amyloid in a pharmacodynamic study with significant reduction of Aβ40 and Aβ42 levels in cerebral spinal fluid. 5MPCA inhibits the enzyme β-secretase, which cleaves the amyloid precursor protein (APP) at the β site, leading to reduced production of β-amyloid. The inhibition of β-secretase by 5MPCA prevents Aβ from being generated and thereby reduces its level in cerebral spinal fluid.
