It has been shown to be effective against phytopathogenic fungi, and it has been used as an antibiotic in the treatment of bacterial infections. 4-Methylindole-3-carboxaldehyde is an analog of streptochlorin, which inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the ribosome. This leads to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. 4-Methylindole-3-carboxaldehyde also has antifungal activity against Candida albicans and Trichophyton mentagrophytes.
