- Benzoic acid, 5-amino-2-chloro-, methyl ester
- Methyl-5-amino-2-chlorbenzolcarboxylat
Methyl 5-amino-2-chlorobenzoate is a herbicide that belongs to the class of phenylureas. It is a selective herbicide with low toxicity used in the control of annual and perennial grasses, broadleaf weeds and sedges. The chemical structure of methyl 5-amino-2-chlorobenzoate is similar to that of a natural plant hormone, which inhibits the enzyme protoporphyrinogen oxidase by substituting for the pyridine ring in this molecule. This inhibition leads to an accumulation of protoporphyrin IX and eventually results in cell death. Methyl 5-amino-2-chlorobenzoate has been shown to be more selective than other herbicides because it does not inhibit the enzyme protoporphyrinogen oxidase in plants.
