3-Methylamino-piperidine dihydrochloride is a synthetic fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent. It is a novel intermediate that can be used in the synthesis of fluoroquinolones. 3-Methylamino-piperidine dihydrochloride has been shown to have potent activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including staphylococci and streptococci, as well as Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The compound has also been found to have some activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, although it is not active against acid-fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium avium complex. 3-Methylamino-piperidine dihydrochloride has been shown to inhibit the growth of various strains of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) at concentrations up to 10 μM.
