• Descrição: Methylphenidate is a psychostimulant drug that is used in the treatment of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. It is a central nervous system stimulant that affects dopamine and norepinephrine levels in the brain. Methylphenidate blocks reuptake of these neurotransmitters, which increases their availability to nerve cells, therefore increasing their activity. When administered orally, methylphenidate reaches peak plasma concentrations within 3-5 hours. The half-life of methylphenidate ranges from 11-18 hours depending on dosage form, with time to maximum concentration ranging from 1-2 hours. The major metabolites of methylphenidate are ritalinic acid and pemoline; both are inactive. Methylphenidate is contraindicated in individuals with a history of addiction, psychosis or bipolar disorder.
