4-Methyl-5-thiazolylethyl acetate (4MTEA) is a folic acid antagonist. It is an inhibitor of the enzyme glutamate decarboxylase, which is involved in the synthesis of GABA, and inhibits the production of sulfide from thiosulfate. 4MTEA has shown to be effective against shiitake mushrooms, preventing the growth of this fungi. In addition, 4MTEA has been shown to inhibit Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus casei as well as Candida albicans. This compound also exhibits antioxidant properties, inhibiting lipid peroxidation in vitro and reducing oxidative DNA damage in vivo.
