Methyl (methylsulphinyl)methyl sulphide is a diphenyl sulfoxide that has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. It has been shown to bind to the kinase receptor and inhibit its activity, preventing the phosphorylation of protein substrates. Methyl (methylsulphinyl)methyl sulphide also inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the carbonyl group in proteins, preventing their reaction with amino acids. This leads to a decrease in cellular growth factor and results in a reduction in cell numbers. Methyl (methylsulphinyl)methyl sulphide can be used as a catalyst for Friedel-Crafts reactions, which is an organic reaction that creates carbon-carbon bonds between aliphatic hydrocarbons. The chloride ion can act as a catalyst for this reaction and methyl (methylsulphinyl)methyl sulphide may have an increased rate of catalytic activity due to its electron-donating properties.
