L-Methioninol is a pyrimidine compound that is synthetized from L-methionine. It is an inhibitor of the enzyme cyclic peptide synthetase, which catalyzes the formation of cyclic peptides in bacteria. L-Methioninol has been shown to block the growth of bladder cancer cells in CD-1 mice in vivo and inhibit tumor growth by inhibiting protein synthesis. Methioninol also blocks infectious disease transmission by preventing activation of heterocyclic compounds, such as ethylene diamine, which are used to produce detrusor muscle contractions. This drug has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties through inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
