4-Methyl-2-nitroaniline is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH3NO2. It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water. 4-Methyl-2-nitroaniline has been used as a diagnostic reagent for the detection of hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide, due to its ability to form diazonium salts, which react with these gases to produce colored compounds. The hydroxyl group on 4-methyl-2-nitroaniline can also participate in hydrogen bonding, which can be useful for binding other molecules together or dissolving other molecules. Magnetic susceptibility measurements have also been used to study this molecule's properties.
