4-Methylthiophenylacetic acid is a photochemical reaction product of benzaldehyde and carbon disulfide. It can be synthesized by irradiating the corresponding benzyl ester with UV light in acetonitrile. The yield of 4-methylthiophenylacetic acid is dependent on the concentration of benzaldehyde, the concentration of carbon disulfide, the intensity of irradiation, and the time for which it is irradiated. This compound has been used to study reactions between thiols and carboxylic acids. The functional theory predicts that these reactions will have an electron transfer from carbon to sulfur during bond cleavage. Transients observed during this study confirmed that this was true for 4-methylthiophenylacetic acid and other related compounds.
