Methylene green is a chemical compound that has been used as a stain and dye, as well as an analytical reagent. It is also used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases. Methylene green is a tetrazolium dye that reacts with brain functions and human serum. The mechanism of this reaction is not completely understood, but it may be related to the inhibition of electron transport or to the oxidation of methylene blue by hydrogen peroxide. This product has been shown to inhibit cancer cells in vitro and has been used for wastewater treatment. Methylene green can react with radiation, which changes its properties and may make it more toxic.
