Magnesium naphthenate is a viscosity agent that is resistant to acids, bases, and solvents. It is used in the production of lubricants and hydrocarbons. Magnesium naphthenate has been shown to be effective against infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis and leprosy. When magnesium naphthenate reacts with hydrogen fluoride or hydrochloric acid, it forms a low-energy salt that can be used as a control agent for fires. The hydroxyl group on the magnesium salt can react with sodium carbonate to form a magnesium carbonate and an acid.
