Methazolamide is a drug that is used to treat eye disorders by reducing the production of aqueous humor, which is the fluid that fills the front part of the eye. Methazolamide inhibits the activity of carbonic anhydrase, which catalyzes the conversion of carbon dioxide and water to bicarbonate and hydrogen ions. This leads to decreased acidity in the fluid inside the eye and prevents edema or swelling. Methazolamide has been shown to inhibit dopamine β-hydroxylase (DBH), an enzyme that converts dopamine into epinephrine. DBH inhibition causes increased levels of dopamine in the body, which can lead to toxicity in some people.
