4-Methoxyisoquinoline is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of pyridine compounds and has the molecular formula C8H6N2. This compound is a derivative of benzonitrile and can be obtained by decarboxylation of 4-methoxybenzoic acid. The synthesis of 4-methoxyisoquinoline starts with the reaction between hydrochloric acid and imine, which yields an intermediate cyclic. This intermediate cyclic is then treated with trifluoroacetic acid in order to yield a mixture of carboxylic acids, including 4-methoxyisoquinoline. The synthesis can also be carried out by heating a mixture of sulfur and elements, such as potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide, in dioxan.
4-Methoxyisoquinoline is used as a precursor for pharmaceuticals, such as antipsychotics (clozapine), antiemetics
