3-Methyl-L-phenylalanine is a synthetic structural analog of baikiain, an antibiotic natural product that has been isolated from the fungus Tinctoria tinctoria. 3-Methyl-L-phenylalanine has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis and binding to lipid II in the cell membrane. The minimal moiety is cyclic on one side and linear on the other, with a carbamoyl group at one end and a phenylpropionic acid residue at the other. The spectrum of 3-methyl-L-phenylalanine includes strains of Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Streptococcus pyogenes.
