4-[2-(Methylamino)ethyl]pyridine is an opioid analgesic. It is a pyridyl amine that binds to the opioid receptors in the brain, spinal cord, and other tissues in the body. 4-[2-(Methylamino)ethyl]pyridine interacts with chloride channels in neurons and inhibits the release of neurotransmitters such as glutamate. It also has a high affinity for toluene and aziridine and can be used as an intermediate for production of other compounds. 4-[2-(Methylamino)ethyl]pyridine is metabolized by hydrolysis into dihydrochloride or monohydrochloride, which are both active forms of this drug.
