N-Methyldiethylamine is a proton donor in the reaction. The pKa of the conjugate acid is 4.5 and the pH range where the protonation equilibrium lies is from 5 to 8. N-Methyldiethylamine has been shown to inhibit replication by binding to ATP channels on the surface of the HIV virus, which prevents the release of viral particles from infected cells. This inhibition can be reversed by increasing pH levels. N-Methyldiethylamine also inhibits radiation induced DNA damage in human lymphocytes and can be used as a protective agent for radiation exposure.
