The pro-apoptotic protein, Bax, is activated by 3-methyl-1-cyclopentadecanone in mammalian cells, inducing apoptosis. This compound also inhibits the activity of enzymes such as lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase, which are involved in inflammation. 3-Methyl-1-cyclopentadecanone has been shown to be effective against cancer tissues and neuronal death in rats. 3MCTD has been shown to inhibit polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of DNA from rhizoma gastrodiae, a traditional Chinese herbal medicine for the treatment of myocardial infarcts.
