3-Methyl-2-butenal is an organic compound that is a colorless liquid at room temperature. It has the chemical formula CH3C(O)CHO. 3-Methyl-2-butenal is a reactive inorganic acid, which can be used as a reagent for the synthesis of other organic compounds. The mechanism of this reaction is not completely understood, but it likely involves the formation of methyl ketones by an inorganic acid and a molecule with a methyl group. This process can be observed using FTIR spectroscopy. In addition, 3-methyl-2-butenal can also be used as a solid catalyst for the synthesis of other organic molecules. 3-Methyl-2-butenal is considered to be mildly acidic, with a pKa value of 7.5 (25°C).
